Durham Cathedral Institute: Democracy: What Future? A discussion with Nick Robinson and Ed Balls.

On Friday 1 December, the Durham Cathedral Institute hosted a debate at the Cathedral on the subject, ‘Democracy: What Future?’.

The debate was chaired by a Durham University Professor of Theology and involved Nick Robinson, presenter of BBC Radio 4’s Today programme and former BBC Political Editor, and Ed Balls, former Secretary of State for Education and former Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer, former Strictly Come Dancing Contestant and broadcaster. Despite much snow and huge train delays (for both students and Ed Balls), a number of Year 12 students including many members of the Politics class, braved the weather and attended this debate at the Cathedral.

This was an outstanding opportunity to listen to two leading public figures discuss the future of democracy ahead of a UK general election and US Presidential election in 2024. A good, but cold night was had by all!
