Early Childhood Development is not taught at Key Stage 3.

Pearson Level 3 Alternative Academic Qualification BTEC National in Early Childhood Development (Extended Certificate- Equivalent to one A Level- 360 GLH)
The Extended Certificate is for students who are interested in learning about the children’s care and education sector (0-8 years) alongside other BTEC Nationals, AAQ's and / or A-Levels. As part of your studies you will also complete work experience in a local early years setting throughout Y12 and Y13.
Year 12
Unit 1: Children’s Development- Externally assessed unit- 90 GLH
Unit 3: Play and Learning- Internally assessed, externally moderated unit - 90 GLH
Year 13
Unit 2: Keeping Children Safe- Externally assessed unit- 90 GLH
Unit 4: Research and Reflective Practice in Early Childhood Settings- Internally assessed, externally moderated unit - 90 GLH
Unit 1: Learners will explore principles of children’s development and the appropriate milestones across each of the five areas of development. Theories and models of children’s development are considered, as well as the impact upon children’s development due to a range of factors.
Unit 2: Learners will discover the legislation and guidance that is in place to ensure health, safety and safeguarding procedures are in place within early childhood settings. Underpinning knowledge is given on how to ensure a safe environment is in place, including policies, procedures, risk assessments and how to respond to emergency situations.
Unit 3: Learners will focus on types of play and the opportunities which should be made available to children at different ages and stages of development. The importance of play will be considered and how it can support children’s learning and development, together with the role of the adult in these aspects and the skills that are essential for professionals working with children.
Unit 4: Learners will review research carried out on issues in the early childhood sector and how these may benefit children and improve practice for professionals.
