SISTER ACT: A DIVINE MUSICAL COMEDY

After months of hard work, this July Sacred Heart students performed a remarkable adaption of hit musical ‘Sister Act’ to sold out audiences. The story follows the young Deloris Van Cartier, an aspiring showgirl, who finds herself in a quandary after witnessing a gruesome murder. As a result, she is placed in protective custody and is relocated to the one place no one would ever dare to look: a convent. Disguised as a nun, Deloris finds herself battling with the rigid lifestyle expected of a follower of the faith and the expectations set by the Mother Superior.

Using her unique disco moves and singing talent, Deloris manages to breathe new life into the church choir, but in doing so blows her cover. As the church’s success grows, Deloris find herself in a dilemma and as the criminals target her location, the nuns are forced to evacuate the abbey. With the power of newly found sisterhood, Deloris and her ‘sisters’ join forces against the crooks to protect their community and church. The story ends with a crew of disgruntled ruffians, a thriving community, and a bright future for our main protagonist.

‘Sister Act’ weaves an exciting tale of sisterhood and community, with threads of comedy and romance laced throughout. Year 10 student Goodness stunned as Deloris Van Cartier, performing with unwavering confidence and charm. Scene partner and fellow Year 10 Olive was astounding as the straight-faced Mother Superior. Nuns Sister Mary Robert (Sophie), Mary Patrick (Layla-May), Mary Lazarus (Martha), Mary Martin-of-Tours (Vivienne) and Mary Theresa (Anna), along with Monsignor O’Hara (Chloe) gave an outstanding ensemble performance bringing laughs and heart to the story. Even the criminals won over the audience with hilarious adaptions by Rae, Namra, Erin, Winner, and Alycia. In addition, Eden as hapless police officer, Eddie ‘Sweaty Eddie’ Southern, wowed with her incredible rendition of ‘I Could Be That Guy’.

Set, costume and design were managed by the remarkable backstage crew. A special thanks goes to the Music and Performing Arts staff - Mrs Palma, Ms Burgess, Mrs Richardson, Ms Curry, Mr Cornish, Mr Oates, Mr Simpson, and Mrs Lewandoska, as well as the Sixth Form School Events Team for all the hard work they put into making such an enjoyable performance for all.

The show was a truly phenomenal experience for all and a brilliant way to bring another busy year of music and performing arts to a close.
