Year 10 Hospitality & Catering Students Soak Up the Industry in Style

Last week, our Year 10 Hospitality & Catering students had the incredible opportunity to experience the world of professional hospitality first-hand, with a jam-packed day visiting some of Newcastle’s most renowned venues: Dobson & Parnell, Pitcher & Piano, and the brand new Dakota Hotel.
The sun was shining as students set off, and the atmosphere was full of excitement and curiosity. First stop: Dobson & Parnell, where students were welcomed into the elegant surroundings of this fine dining restaurant. They had the chance to speak with a variety of staff members, gaining insight into different roles across the business—from front-of-house to kitchen staff, and even management. The team generously shared their career journeys, tips for success, and a behind-the-scenes look at running a high-end establishment.
Next, students headed down to the vibrant Pitcher & Piano on the Quayside. Here, they got hands-on experience by setting the table for service and placing their own lunch orders at the till—a great way to practise customer interaction and understand how front-of-house operations work in real time. Of course, lunch was enjoyed in the sunshine with one of the best views in the city!
The final visit of the day took students to the newly opened Dakota Hotel, a sleek and modern venue that left a strong impression. Students were impressed by the luxurious interiors and the professionalism of the staff, who took time to explain what it takes to work in a 5-star environment—from housekeeping and concierge services to culinary and management roles.
Throughout the day, students showed fantastic engagement, asking thoughtful questions and soaking up knowledge that will no doubt inspire their own career ambitions. The experience offered a valuable glimpse into the diversity and dynamism of the hospitality industry.
