Year 10 Students Experience Life at Cambridge

Twelve Year 10 students recently enjoyed an inspiring two-day visit to Jesus College, Cambridge, gaining a valuable insight into university life and the exciting opportunities that higher education can offer.
The trip began with a very early start, but spirits were high as students boarded the coach and headed south towards Cambridge. On arrival, they were greeted by glorious sunshine and soaring temperatures. Fortunately, the beautiful grounds of Jesus College provided plenty of shade, allowing everyone to relax and enjoy their lunch beneath the trees before the day's activities began.
Following a warm welcome and introductions, students were divided into smaller groups to take part in a series of fascinating sample lectures. These sessions challenged students to think beyond the boundaries of the school curriculum and showcased the breadth of subjects available at university.
In Mathematics, students explored an engaging journey from Highest Common Factors to the elegance of the Golden Ratio before examining methods used to approximate the value of Pi. The Chemistry lecture introduced students to the science behind thin-film technology, demonstrating how cutting-edge research influences everyday products and future innovations. Meanwhile, the Forensic Linguistics session examined the language of criminality and how linguistic analysis can support criminal investigations, offering a fascinating glimpse into a highly specialised field of study.
Throughout the visit, students also received valuable advice about applying to Cambridge and other leading universities. Staff and student ambassadors shared information about academic expectations, personal statements, admissions processes and ways to prepare for future applications. This guidance helped students to better understand the pathways available to them and encouraged them to think ambitiously about their futures.
After a busy day of learning, everyone enjoyed supper in the college hall, experiencing a traditional aspect of university life. The evening continued with activities organised by the student ambassadors, including games of pool, frisbee and football. Students made the most of the warm summer weather, enjoying the college grounds and spending time together until the sun finally set.
The following morning provided another opportunity to explore Cambridge. Students visited Christ's College, learning more about its rich history and unique character, before taking a walk through Cambridge city centre. The visit offered a chance to experience the atmosphere in this world famous university city and to see first-hand the environment in which thousands of students study each year.
Our students represented the school exceptionally well throughout the trip. They engaged enthusiastically with lecturers and ambassadors, asked thoughtful questions and embraced every opportunity presented to them. The visit was both enjoyable and educational, helping to raise aspirations and giving students a memorable insight into life at one of the world's leading universities. We look forward to offering similar opportunities in the future.
