Year 9 Step Back in Time at Beamish!

This half-term, our Year 9 students took part in the annual trip to Beamish, organised by the History and English departments. This fantastic opportunity allowed students to bring their learning to life by exploring the women's suffrage movement in the early 20th century and experiencing a pivotal period in British history.
Throughout the first half-term of Year 9, students have been studying the changing role of women in society, from the medieval period through to the 21st century. The visit provided an excellent opportunity to build upon their classroom learning, with the brilliant staff and volunteers at Beamish immersing students in the social and cultural attitudes of Edwardian Britain.

One of the highlights of the visit was the courage and confidence demonstrated by students as they re-enacted a women's suffrage rally. Dressed in traditional early 20th-century clothing, students proudly marched along the cobbled streets of the 1900s Town, bringing the campaign for women's voting rights to life. Students also wrote and delivered their own speeches at the bandstand, demonstrating an impressive understanding of the period alongside excellent public speaking and oracy skills. Their enthusiasm, creativity and willingness to embrace the experience were wonderful to see.
The entire Year 9 cohort took part in the visit, and students were a credit to the school. Their outstanding behaviour, enthusiasm and engagement throughout the day made the trip a thoroughly enjoyable and rewarding experience for everyone involved.
A huge thank you to the staff and volunteers at Beamish, as well as all the colleagues who helped make the trip such a success!
