Our annual school trip to Rome once again proved to be an unforgettable highlight of the school year, giving 45 of our Year 10 students an incredible opportunity to explore the religious, historical, and cultural treasures of one of the world’s most remarkable cities.

A Special Audience with Pope Leo at Vatican City:

One of the most cherished moments of the visit was our audience with Pope Leo in Vatican City. Students joined pilgrims from around the world in St. Peter’s Square, taking in the atmosphere of anticipation and reverence. Pope Leo addressed those gathered with words of encouragement, prayed for all present, and offered a final blessing over the crowd. This was a deeply moving experience for many of our students, some of whom described it as the spiritual highlight of the entire trip.

Following the audience, we were accompanied by an English‑speaking guide who helped us explore the extraordinary treasures of the Vatican Museums, Sistine Chapel, and St. Peter’s Basilica. Seeing masterpieces such as Michelangelo’s Creation of Adam in person allowed students to connect their GCSE Religious Education and Art History studies to the real thing.

Inside St. Peter’s Basilica, students were invited to spend time in quiet prayer and reflection. Many took this moment to make personal intentions, reflect on their faith journey, or simply appreciate the beauty and serenity of one of the holiest sites in the Catholic tradition.

Walking Through Ancient History

Rome’s ancient heart provided powerful links to the students’ studies in ethics, history, and philosophy. Guided tours of the Colosseum, Roman Forum, and Palatine Hill helped students imagine what life would have been like in Ancient Rome—whether as a spectator at the gladiatorial games, a philosopher debating ideas, or a citizen wandering the bustling marketplace.

Walking through the remains of temples, arches, and meeting places gave students a deeper understanding of how ancient civilisations shaped modern society. Discussions during the trip touched on themes such as justice, leadership, morality, and the influence of Rome on modern political and legal systems.

Immersed in Roman Culture

Students were able to experience the rhythm of everyday life in Rome. Visits to iconic landmarks such as the Pantheon, Trevi Fountain, and Spanish Steps offered opportunities for photos, relaxation, and soaking up the local culture.

This has yet again, been a trip to remember and our annual Rome trip continues to be a treasured tradition in our school community, giving students a chance to deepen their understanding of faith, culture, and history while creating lifelong memories with their classmates and teachers.
