Articulation Prize at the Laing Art Gallery

Ella McDermott, in Year 12, competed in the regional heat of the Articulation Prize at the Laing Art Gallery in collaboration with National Gallery London. Speakers plan and deliver a presentation on an artwork of their choice. Out of six speakers from schools across the northeast, and against very tough competition, Ella came first place!!

We are delighted, and the next stop is the grand final at National Gallery in London on 24th March, which involves ten regional finalists from across the country delivering their same presentation to Sir Gabriele Finaldi, director of National Gallery and Ali Smith, author and playwright.

Ella’s winning presentation was on 'Judith Beheading Holofernes' a painting by Renaissance artist Artemisia Gentileschi. ISHHS was involved in the National Gallery touring exhibition, where we were fortunate to display 'Saint Catherine of Alexandria,' by Gentileschi. The painting was displayed in the auditorium (with security guards 24/7 as it is worth 3.6 million pounds!) Although Ella was not here then, or initially aware of this link, is great to see that Gentileschi's courage and confidence still very much present at SHHS.
