Building Community Beyond Our Classroom: Goals Pen Pal Project

This term, our Year 7 and 8 Goals Ambassador students have been taking part in an exciting Pen Pal Project focused on the Sacred Heart Goal of Community. Each student has been paired with another student from St Catherine's College, Armagh, Northern Ireland.
At the heart of this project is a simple but powerful idea: community extends beyond the walls of our school. By writing thoughtful letters to students in another school, our pupils are learning how to introduce themselves confidently, represent Newcastle upon Tyne with pride, and reflect on what makes Sacred Heart such a strong and supportive community.

In their letters, students share what life is like at Sacred Heart, the subjects and clubs they enjoy, and how we live out the Goal of Community through charity work, teamwork, liturgical events, and daily acts of kindness. They are encouraged not only to describe our school, but also to ask meaningful questions about their pen pals’ experiences. This exchange fosters curiosity, empathy, and mutual respect.
Most importantly, it reminds our students that community is not just something we talk about — it is something we actively build.
We look forward to seeing the connections, understanding, and friendships that grow from this initiative.
