SHHS Ski Trip 2026: A Week of Adventure, Snow, and School Spirit

It all began at 5am on 31st January, when 38 bleary‑eyed Year 9s somehow managed to gather at Newcastle Airport, most awake only thanks to last‑minute snacks and the promise of snow. A couple of hours later we touched down in Geneva, and after a scenic three‑hour coach ride (featuring equal parts excitement and napping), we reached the sunny French Alps and our new snowy playground: Les Menuires.

From the moment skis were clipped on, the students were pushed right out of their comfort zones, quite literally, for some, who discovered that stopping is a surprisingly important skill. But over six fun‑filled days, those same beginners transformed into confident skiers, cruising blue slopes and even tackling the occasional red with style (or at least with enthusiasm). The determination was incredible to watch, and even though bruised feet and tired legs became the norm, every morning still started with smiles, helped along by our brilliant instructors Philipe, Jean-Philippe, Katty, and Nikolas, who somehow kept their patience despite some very creative skiing techniques.

Off the slopes, the adventures continued. Students took on the alpine rollercoaster La Mine, checked out the jaw‑dropping views from Pointe de la Masse at 2,804m, and even joined in a resort‑wide mini‑festival complete with fireworks. There was no shortage of things to do, or opportunities to spend money on French sweets and crepes.

Throughout the week, the Year 9s proved themselves to be one of the most determined groups we’ve ever taken to France, throwing themselves into every challenge, cheering each other on, and showing surprising stamina when there was a chance to buy pizza.

Leaving Les Menuires and the Trois Vallées behind on the final morning was definitely bittersweet. But the memories made, friendships strengthened, fears and slopes conquered (eventually) will stick with them for a lifetime. And judging by the excited chatter on the journey home, some parents may soon find themselves being strongly encouraged to book a return trip…
