The Newcastle Youth Council gives young people a real voice in how the city is run. Its key purposes include:
Representing young people
Experiencing democracy
Campaigning on issues that matter
Representing Newcastle nationally
Building skills
To be stand for election you must live, work, or study in Newcastle, or be looked after by Newcastle City Council; be aged 11–17 on election day; and care about issues affecting young people. The elected members serve a two-year term. There are 19 seats in total: 12 Youth Council seats, 4 UK Youth Parliament seats and 3 seats from existing participation groups.
The elections are run city-wide, and this year Sacred Heart became a voting centre. We had three Year 12 students running in the election. They were Tosan, Ogechi and Valerie.
During election week, our candidates delivered their manifestos in assemblies to all year groups and on Thursday 19th March our Sixth Form students along with our student council made sure that all students received a voting slip and were able to vote. An incredible 1,050 Sacred Heart students voted in the election, and we are pleased to announce that out of 84 candidates across the city, Ogechi was voted in as a member of the Newcastle Youth Council. This is a wonderful achievement. Ogechi’s top priorities are mental health; school education; and making public transport a cleaner and safer way to travel.
Ogechi will now receive training and will attend council meetings monthly. This is her opportunity to be voice of the youth and our local community. Well done Ogechi: the whole school are proud to have you as our representative in the Youth Council.
