Last term the Year 10 Textile students spent an afternoon at the Discovery Museum in Newcastle City Centre. The Discovery Museum is immersed in the history of Newcastle focusing on the area's maritime, scientific and technological importance to Britain and the rest of the world.
The students were lucky enough to have a private viewing in the archive historical costume vault. Here, the curator selected a number of garments, dating from the 18th Century up until the 1980’s.
They received a talk on the history of the pieces and were given time to sketch the garments of their choice. The trip provided an insight into the history of fashion throughout the ages and how every day events affect the clothing that we wear.
Here is an example of the student’s drawings and also an example of how a student has enhanced their coursework by included the visit into her research.
