Year 12 Computer Science trip to Newcastle University Electronic Engineering Department

Our Year 12 Computer Science trip to Newcastle University’s Electronic Engineering Department was a brilliant chance to see how the things we learn in class connect to real technology.

We spent the day learning about why semiconductors are so important in the modern world, and it was eye‑opening to realise just how much everyday tech relies on them. We also got a tour of the department and were able to talk to PhD students about their projects and what it’s really like to study engineering at university.

One of the highlights was the hands‑on Arduino workshop, where we used micro‑controllers to build and experiment with simple systems, something that really brought the theory to life.

Overall, the trip was insightful, inspiring, and gave us a genuine feel for what studying Electronic Engineering at Newcastle University could be like in the future
