Pupils at Sacred Heart recently took part in the Anthea Bell Prize for Young Translators, a prestigious national competition run by The Queen’s College Translation Exchange at the University of Oxford.

The competition celebrates the art of translation and encourages young people to think creatively and carefully about language. Pupils are given a literary text in the language they study and are challenged to translate it into English, paying close attention not only to meaning, but also to tone, style and the overall effect on the reader. It is a wonderful opportunity for students to develop their confidence, problem-solving skills and appreciation of languages beyond the classroom.

The competition is open to secondary school students across the UK and includes a range of languages, including Spanish, French, German, Italian, Mandarin and Russian. Students compete in different levels according to their stage of learning, with entries judged regionally before national winners are selected.

We are incredibly proud to share that Sacred Heart had a winner in Level 1 Spanish who was not only the top entry in the North East, but also went on to win at national level. Congratulations to Darcey in 7SBY! This is an outstanding achievement and a real testament to Darcey’s linguistic skill, creativity and attention to detail.

Well done to all pupils who took part. Their enthusiasm and effort show just how exciting and rewarding language learning can be.
