Our Year 10 Hospitality & Catering students recently enjoyed an inspiring educational visit to Newcastle Quayside, where they had the opportunity to experience the hospitality industry first-hand.

The day included exclusive tours of three well-known hospitality venues: Hotel du Vin, Malmaison and Pitcher & Piano Newcastle.
At each venue, students were welcomed by experienced hospitality professionals who provided behind-the-scenes tours and shared insights into the wide range of careers available within the industry. From front-of-house and food service to kitchen operations, housekeeping, events, management and marketing, students gained a valuable understanding of the many roles that contribute to the success of a hospitality business.
One of the highlights of the day was hearing directly from staff members about their own career journeys. Students were able to ask questions about qualifications, apprenticeships, progression opportunities and the skills employers look for, helping them make connections between their classroom learning and future career pathways.
The visit also gave students the chance to experience modern hospitality technology by ordering their own lunch using an electronic point-of-sale (EPOS) system at Pitcher & Piano. This practical activity helped students understand how technology is used to improve customer service and streamline operations within the hospitality industry.

Throughout the visit, our students represented the school exceptionally well. They were polite, engaged and enthusiastic, asking thoughtful questions and showing genuine interest in the opportunities available within the sector.
Experiences such as these are an invaluable part of the WJEC Level 2 Hospitality & Catering course, allowing students to develop their knowledge of the industry while building confidence and raising aspirations for future education, apprenticeships and careers.
A huge thank you to the teams at Hotel du Vin, Malmaison and Pitcher & Piano for giving our students such a warm welcome and providing an unforgettable insight into the exciting world of hospitality and to Kerry and Bec from NE1 Can for this fantastic opportunity.
