Pupils from Y7 took part in the Friendship Weaving project as part of the North East Festival of Languages. They each created their own paper weaving and decorated it with words or phrases about friendship in other languages. The individual weavings have been sent to Newcastle Civic Centre where they will be hung together to form a large artwork called an installation. The installation will take the form of several trees, with roots reaching down to the ground and branches reaching out and joining the trees together…extending the branches of friendship.
The vision of the project:
Friendships hold immense importance in our lives, impacting our mental and emotional wellbeing. Cultivating and nurturing positive friendships can bring immense joy, support, and a sense of belonging to our lives. Extending the hand of friendship across the region and the world, the Weaving Friendship project will demonstrate and celebrate the bonds of friendship, support and unity across the world.
Pupils’ experiences:
Saadhana: “I found it a beautiful way to bring culture and friendship together.”
Halima: “It was so fun and it really brought out everyone’s creative side!”
Ellie: “I loved going to the club, doing arts and crafts, while learning more languages!”
Sana: “I enjoyed this activity! It made me think of my own friendships. Bad friends are the birds flying off for their own good. The trees are the good friends that last longer.”
Valerie: “I enjoyed the club very much. I learned new words while also having fun. The club had a very calming atmosphere.”
Ihuoma: “It was fun and exciting. I loved the paper weaving because we got to express our feelings about friendship in a beautiful, heartwarming way.”
Lilly: “It was fun and I enjoyed the paper weaving!”
