This month, Year 11 students took part in a focused and practical Revision Morning designed to help them feel confident, organised, and ready to prepare effectively for the GCSE exam period. The session gave students clear guidance on how to revise, as well as plenty of opportunities to try out strategies for themselves.

Throughout the session, students gained key information and had the chance to practise five essential revision techniques that can make a real difference to their learning:

  1. Making a Revision Timetable – Students learned how to break revision down into manageable chunks, prioritise key topics, and build a realistic schedule that balances schoolwork, homework, and rest.

  2. Cornell Notes – Students explored the Cornell note-taking method, helping them organise information clearly, identify key ideas, and create useful summaries that make revision more effective later on.

  3. Mind Mapping – Mind mapping activities encouraged students to make connections between ideas and organise knowledge visually. This is a great technique for consolidating understanding and remembering complex topics.

  4. Flashcards – Students practised using flashcards about UK cities sorting them into categories based on whether the information was known. It highlighted how retrieval practice can strengthen memory over time.

  5. Mnemonics and Acronyms – used the Copy, Cover, Repeat technique to support recall, for information across their subjects that appear regularly in GCSE exams.

As well as learning revision skills, students also took time to focus on their wellbeing. A guided breathing exercise helped everyone understand simple, effective ways to relax and manage exam stress. They were reminded that success is not just about hard work, but also about looking after themselves.

The morning ended with a lively Kahoot quiz, where students were incredibly enthusiastic and demonstrated excellent knowledge of the strategies covered. Their energy and participation showed how much they had engaged with the session, and how quickly they could apply what they had learned.

Students and families are encouraged to explore the Professional Learner Toolkit, which contains a wide range of revision strategies and resources that can support preparation throughout the GCSE exam period. Using a variety of techniques and choosing the ones that work best for the individual, can help make revision more effective, manageable, and confidence-boosting.

Well done to all Year 11 students for their effort and positive attitude throughout the morning – a great step forward in their GCSE preparation!
